10 journeys to a place where nothing happens

Musician Taito Hoffrén and artist Juha Valkeapää started this journey to a place where nothing happens in 2005. It has been a long, dark and winding road, but we came out as winners from our first trip: the Baltic Circle journey went smoothly, although the Merc didn’t start in the Sunday night, when we were supposed to go home. Presently, we are maintaining ourselves and getting ready for new challenges.

Quote from MMCA Seoul’s brochure: “The two artists invite the audience to a tent instead of a theater. After serving the audience coffee and pancakes, they begin the performance on a rocking chair. Rather than acting out a character or reading a fictive text, they tell the stories of their lives and recite the diaries they have been writing for many years. The performers become themselves, the stage becomes life, and the performance becomes a gathering. Against the ceaseless loop of production and consumption of art in a capitalist society, will Valkeapää and Hoffrén’s “politics of doing nothing” prove to be effective? Could it truly be possible to realize a bare performance, a bare life, a temporary gathering, an act of doing absolutely nothing?”
